Principal's Corner
Dear Hamilton Middle School Community,
It is with deep joy and great hope that I am returning to MMSD as the Interim Principal at Hamilton Middle School. I am excited to co-create a learning environment where we all belong, and I am honored to bring my systems-level, equity-focused innovative instructional leadership to this community.
For the past five years, I have been at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as the Director of Operations, Partnerships, and Innovation where I took a human-centered approach to creating just and equitable working and learning environments. Prior to this, I worked as an administrator in curriculum and instruction at MMSD, leading K-12 systemic professional learning and resource development to include supervising K-12 literacy and social studies teacher leaders as well as literacy interventions within an equitable multi-tiered system of support. I started my education career as a high school English teacher and quickly recognized the need to become a reading specialist in order to support students with expanding their literate identities. I then became an instructional coach, working with educators to unlock content-area learning through disciplinary literacy.
When I do not have my head in a book, I spend as much time as I can outdoors. I am an avid pickleball player, golfer, runner, hiker, biker, kayaker, skier, and all-around traveler. Just this summer, I summited Mount Kilimanjaro and also learned how to play ultimate frisbee. I am a mindfulness and qigong practitioner. I am a cancer survivor. Closest to my heart, I am a mom of two incredible adult daughters, Emma and Jo, who both graduated from West High School. I have two dogs, Nia and Miles, and I am also a daughter, a sister, and an aunt.
I am looking forward to leaning in with you all as we center our young people and work collectively toward their social, emotional, and academic development!
With joy and gratitude for what is and what’s to come,
Tamara Mouw
